CFA Global Investment Research Challenge (GIRC) Kickoff Meeting Has Been Scheduled

The CFA Institute Global Investment Research Challenge offers students the unique opportunity to learn from leading industry experts and compete with peers from the world’s top finance programs. This annual educational initiative promotes best practices in equity research among the next generation of analysts through hands-on mentoring and intensive training in company analysis and presentation skills. The challenge gathers students, investment industry professionals, publicly traded companies, and corporate sponsors together locally, regionally, and globally for a real world competition. Participation in the challenge promotes best practices in equity research and company analysis, as students research, analyze, and report on a company as if they are practicing analysts.

The CFA Societies of Milwaukee and Madison have announced the schedule for the local CFA Investment Research Challenge. The GIRC kickoff meeting and networking event will be Thursday, October 21st. They have announced that 10 local universities are going to participate in this year's Challenge. At the kickoff meeting they will disclose the subject company for the challenge and the CEO of the subject company will address the audience. Most of the Industry Mentors will be attending the program so CFA teams will have the opportunity to meet their CFA mentor.

Buzz Williams to Speak at NYC Circles Event on October 19th, But Marquette Madness Begins on Friday

Basketball seasons kick off with Marquette Madness

Marquette Madness will be held at the Al McGuire Center on Friday, Oct. 15, at 7 p.m., celebrating the official start of the 2010-11 Golden Eagle men’s and women’s basketball seasons. Doors open at 6:45 p.m. The event will include team introductions, scrimmages and three-point and dunk contests. For the first time, fans in attendance will be able to participate in the dunk contest voting by text message. All attendees receive a free “Realizing The Dream” long-sleeved T-shirt and a schedule poster.

Marquette FMA Students Will Have Opporturnity to Meet BNP-Paribas' North American CEO, Everett Schenk, During Their NYC Visit


Thanks to the efforts of Rick Broeren (MU '77), Managing Director and Head of U.S. Corporate Coverage, BNP Paribas - New York and Claire Cerni - the Marquette University FMA students visiting New York next week will have an opportunity to meet Everett M. Schenk. He is the Chief Executive Officer - North America BNP Paribas. 

Mr. Schenk is responsible for BNP Paribas’ North American Corporate and Investment Banking activities and is responsible for overseeing the North American operations for the Bank’s Asset Management and Securities Service activities.  Mr. Schenk assumed full responsibility for this appointment on May 23, 2000, the date of the formal merger between BNP and Paribas. 

Beginning in November of 1998 until the time of the merger, Mr. Schenk was Chief Executive Officer of Paribas North America, responsible for Paribas’ various activities and business interests in the U.S., South America and Canada.  Prior to this appointment, he was head of Corporate Banking for Paribas North America as of April 1, 1996. 

Previously, Mr. Schenk worked in Paribas’ Paris headquarters overseeing banking activities in North and South America. Mr. Schenk began working for Paribas in New York in 1989 as head of Corporate Banking, with responsibility for the bank’s real estate, merchant banking, large corporate, energy, project finance and loan syndications businesses.   

Mr. Schenk began his career in 1973 at Chemical Banking Corporation. During his 16 years at Chemical, he worked in a number of different areas of the bank including senior management positions in client coverage, project finance and investment banking. Mr. Schenk holds an M.B.A. from the Amos Tuck School at Dartmouth College and a B.A. degree in International Relations from Brown University.

Mr. Schenk is a member of the Executive Committee of the Institute of International Bankers and was Chairman from 2004 – 2007.  He is also a Board member of the Foreign Policy Association and member of the Economic Club of New York.

MARQUETTE UNIVERSITY'S FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION (FMA) NEW YORK TRIP SCHEDULED FOR OCTOBER 19–23, 2010


The annual Financial Management Association (FMA) trip to New York will take place next week (October 19 - 23). Dr. David Krause, AIM program director, will be leading nearly 30 Marquette finance majors to visit many of the leading financial firms located in New York City. 
The visit starts off on Wednesday with the students attending a Marquette CIRCLES alumni event at the Hearst Tower. A focus session, led by Dr. Krause, will begin at 5:30 pm. The title of the session is: “Beyond the Financial Crisis: Leaders from Innovative Investment Firms Discuss Modern Investment Trends.”
Following a welcome by the College of Business Administration Dean, Dr. Linda Salchenberger, Dr. Krause will begin the focus session. The panelists include: Steve Czech (Bus Ad ’86, Managing Director and Portfolio Manager, FrontPoint Partners LLC); Scott Schroeder (Bus Ad ’92, Grad ’96, Law ’96, Co-founding Partner, Balyasny Asset Management L.P.); and Ben Somers (Bus Ad ’98, Principal and Head of Business Development, Elementum Advisors). After the one hour panel discussion, head Marquette basketball coach, Buzz Williams, will be the keynote speaker for the New York alumni gathering.
The next day includes visits to Balyasny Asset Management, Bloomberg, and Morgan Stanley - followed by an alumni / student mixer in mid-town Manhattan. Thursday is equally as busy with trips planned to Daruma Asset Management, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Royal Bank of Canada, and Goldman Sachs. The students and Dr. Krause will also visit Wall Street, Battery Park, and other lower Manhattan sites. Friday will include trips to BNP-Paribas, JP Morgan, and Citigroup.
Photos and details about the NYC FMA trip will be posted. All of the sophomores, juniors, and seniors traveling to New York are anxious to get going. It should be one of the best events of the year for the Marquette finance students. 

Marquette economics professor appointed to Fed council

Today's The Business Journal of Milwaukee reported that Abdur Chowdhury, chair and professor of economics in Marquette University’s College of Business Administration, has been appointed to the Chicago Federal Reserve Bank’s Academic Advisory Council.

The Fed's Academic Advisory Council meets twice annually, in March and September, to provide monetary policy advice to the central bank. Chowdhury joins more than a dozen other professors from institutions within the Chicago Fed’s district.

Chowdhury specializes in open economy macroeconomics and monetary policy. As the chief economist for Capital Market Consultants in Milwaukee, he prepares quarterly and monthly commentaries on U.S. and global economic issues and challenges. He also provides regular advice on economic policy issues to a number of investment firms and financial institutions.

AIM Super Saturday Held on October 9 for Class of 2012 Applicants

On Saturday, October 9, a 'Super Day' was held for the students aspiring to become members of the AIM Class of 2012. Each student had at least eight interviews during the course of the morning with AIM alumni and various local investment professionals.

Dr. David Krause, AIM program director said, "It was great to have so many AIM grads return to campus to lend a helping hand on a Saturday morning. The AIM decision process is very challenging and I appreciate all of the help the interviewers provided. Each of the interviewers meet a minimum of 14 AIM applicants - so we had a good opportunity to meet and thoroughly interview each of the students."

Following the interviews, Dr. Krause met with the group to discuss each of the applicants. "The process is quite thorough. We reviewed all of the students resumes, application essays, letters of recommendation, and their transcripts. I completed a similar process earlier in the week with College of Business Administration faculty and administrators."

Following in the wake of scandals and the financial crisis of 2008, Dr. Sarah Peck presents a framework for teaching investment ethics to future and current finance professionals.  In this Guest Lecture, she addresses the biggest challenges of incorporating ethics into the investments classroom, then walks through specific examples of how ethics enhances and can be incorporated into presenting quantitative measures of portfolio risk and return.
