Marquette University : Be The Difference

Welcome to Marquette University’s 138th academic year – and the 14th year of the Applied Investment Management (AIM) program. Thank you for supporting our mission which is to search for truth, discover and share knowledge, foster personal and professional excellence, promote a life of faith, and develop leadership expressed in service to others.

This week Marquette has welcomed the largest first-year class in our history. We have opened Wild Commons – the newest student housing facility. We also begin our new Marquette Core Curriculum with the incoming Class of 2022. We also looking forward to the recently opened Fiserv Forum—which serves as the new home of the Milwaukee Bucks and Marquette Men’s Basketball.

Performance of Marquette's AIM International Equity Fund

How is the AIM International Equity Fund Doing? Just Fine.

Previously we reported on the recent performance of Marquette's student-managed Small Cap Equity Fund. This article focuses on the other equity fund - the Marquette International Equity Fund.

Managing a non-US portfolio of equity securities is challenging for any asset manager. Imagine being 21 years old and expected to manage a $600,000 portfolio? Well, that’s what students in Marquette’s Applied Investment Management (AIM) program have been doing since September 2008.

Image result for marquette aim programWhat is significant about September 2008? It was literally the point where the bottom fell out of the US and international financial markets. The stock market crash of 2008 occurred on September 29, 2008, when the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 778 points in intra-day trading – which was the largest point drop in history. (It plummeted because Congress rejected the bank bailout bill, but the stresses that led to the crash had been building for a long time).

Overall, the experience of managing an international stock portfolio has been a meaningful experience for Marquette's AIM students – and the returns have rebounded and continue on pace to beat various benchmarks (see the table below). In an upcoming blog we will provide readers with the current holdings in the portfolio.

What's Inside Marquette's AIM Small Cap Equity Fund? At Look at the Current Holdings (Including Six Stocks That Have More Than Doubled in 2018)

Holdings and YTD Performance of the AIM Small Cap Fund as of 8/26/2018

As presented previously, the Small Cap Fund managed by the students in Marquette's Applied Investment Management (AIM) program have generated outstanding performance recently.

Since the beginning of the year, the AIM Fund is up 20.6% compared to the Russell 2000 Index which is up 13.2%. - over 7.4% above the benchmark.

Six stock holdings have more than doubled since the beginning of 2018 (including ShotSpotter and Natera which have increased more than 200% since January 1st). 8 of the top 10 performers in 2018 are in either the Technology or Healthcare industries.

The table below lists the individual holdings of the AIM Small Cap Fund - to enlarge the table and view the YTD returns, click on the table.

Marquette's AIM Small Cap Fund Continues Impressive Performance Run

As of 8/24/2018 the AIM Small Cap Fund is Besting the Benchmark Across All Measurement Periods

The students in Marquette's Applied Investment Management (AIM) program will be returning from their summer internships on Monday, 8/27 and will be pleased by the outstanding performance of the AIM Small Cap Fund.

Since June 30th, the AIM Fund is up 8.69% compared to the Russell 2000 Index which is up 5.18%. Over the past 12 months the AIM Fund is up over 37% - nearly 10% above the benchmark.

Dr. David Krause, AIM program director, said that "the performance of the AIM Small Cap Equity Fund has been nothing short of amazing....based on Morningstar rankings of other actively managed small cap blend funds, the AIM Fund is in the top 2% over the past 1- and 2-year periods."

Dr. Krause added, "This is not just the performance of one AIM class, but the cumulative performance of many of the past groups of AIM students. Our 5- and 10-year returns are above the Russell 2000 benchmark - and not many active managers can make that claim."

The AIM students will be studying portfolio performance metrics early in the fall semester. They will have an opportunity to dissect the return performance to understand the areas of strength and weakness. Note: the performance of the individual holdings of the AIM Small Cap Fund are posted in a separate table in another blog entry.
