Micro-Blogging Questions and Comments (via Twitter) during the AIM student equity presentations

Students and guests have the opportunity to Tweet questions and comments during the AIM equity pitches

First set of AIM pitches at 3:00 Friday, 9/7 - Follow this link to access the write-ups and other information to view on-line

The AIM student equity pitches have always been one of the main highlights of Marquette’s Applied Investment Management program. The opportunity for students to actively manage over $3 million of domestic and international equity and fixed-income portfolios has been an important part of Marquette AIM program’s experiential learning since its inception in 2005.

The students are responsibility for actively managing the stocks within their sector (making timely buy and sell recommendations that are voted upon by their peers). All AIM students are required to do a minimum of four equity pitches during their tenure in the AIM program.

Image result for marquette aim studentsStarting again in September 2018, the AIM program will be integrating micro-blogging (via Twitter) into the Friday afternoon student equity pitches. Students and guests in the AIM Room during the pitches will have up to 280 characters to post comments or questions to the presenter. These tweets will appear real-time on the digital display board in the AIM Room. Those professionals viewing online will also be encouraged to post comments and questions via Twitter at the MarquetteAIM account --- instructions including the proper hashtag will be provided to ‘followers’ of the AIM Twitter account.

The student equity pitches take place each Friday afternoon during the semester – either in the AIM Room or at a local investment company (an activity we have taken to calling our ‘road shows’). The students prepare and distribute a professional equity write-up (note: every AIM write-up since the inception of the program in 2005 is archived here).

The students are then responsible for making a five-minute pitch before their peers, faculty and any alumni or investment professional in attendance (note: the Friday afternoon equity presentations are also webcast live). Following the student’s pitch the floor is opened for questions and answers for about ten minutes. This has been highly instructive as the students must be prepared to defend their investment recommendation and answer questions in an extemporaneous manner.

This semester, the students in attendance at the AIM pitches will be micro-blogging their questions and comments during the AIM presentations. Using #AIMpitch within the tweet will enable the students to view the message during the AIM presentation --- which will be shown on the large digital display board in the AIM Room. Using our Rise Digital Display, the various tweets will be posted real-time during the presentations.
The goal of using Twitter during the AIM pitches is to:

  1. provide immediate feedback to the equity presenter;
  2. allow students and professionals in attendance or viewing online to pose questions that require additional clarification;
  3. extend the discussion beyond the student’s 15-minute live equity pitch and Q&A session;
  4. provide permanent documentation of the discussion, questions and responses;
  5. provide students and professionals who could not view the live presentation an opportunity to participate and offer input; and
  6. to help spread information about the AIM program and the student-managed equity presentations.

Please feel free to email the AIM Coordinator, Jessica Hoerres,
(Jessica.hoerres@marquett.edu) if you wish to obtain instructions on how you can view the AIM pitches live on the web and  how you can post questions and comments via Twitter on the MarquetteAIM account.

Good Classroom Discussion in the AIM Program on the Issues Surrounding Elon Musk’s “Funding Secured” Tesla Going Private Tweet

What will be the outcome of Elon Musk’s “Funding Secured” Tesla Going Private Tweet? Is this a violation of securities law?

Image result for applied investment management program marquette roomThis week the students in the AIM Class of 2020 had an opportunity to read various Wall Street Journal articles about the legal and regulatory issues encircling Elon Musk following his tweet about how Tesla had “funding secured” and was going private at $420 per share.

These are the questions that were discussed:

Image result for elon musk tweet
  • Is there a problem with the tweet – did it violate SEC required basic reporting requirements?
  • Was the Musk tweet an improper reporting of a material event (no Form 8-K was issued) and was this a violation of Regulation Fair Disclosure – Reg FD)?
  • Is having 25 million followers on Twitter a valid defense for Musk’s going private at $420 per share tweet?
  • Did Elon Musk violate Rule 10b-5 involving the employment of manipulative and deceptive devices?
  • Was there an attempt to harm short sellers and was there a clear intent to defraud?
  • What could the SEC do if they find Musk and Tesla were in violation of Rule 105-b?
  • Does Musk and Tesla have a valid defense? Will the Trump-led SEC look the other way?

Is there a way out for Musk and Tesla – and what is likely to happen?

The students' conclusion - If serious consideration is being given to taking Tesla private, the company and Musk have an incentive to reach a resolution with the SEC as quickly as possible.

The firms that might help fund a deal may be hesitant to commit financing if the cloud of an SEC investigation is hanging over Tesla.

But resolving the investigation will not be easy, at least not until there is greater clarity about what exactly Mr. Musk meant with his ill-fated tweet.

The students in the AIM Program will watch this playout through the remainder of the fall semester.

PJ Dallman, Strategic Consultant at FactSet visited the AIM Program on Friday, August 31st

This semester the AIM program will again welcome numerous outside guests who can bring applied knowledge into the classroom

On Friday, August 31, PJ Dallman visited Marquette’s AIM program and presented on the capabilities and use of FactSet – one of the leading providers of financial information and analytic software for investment professionals.

The AIM Research Room is fully equipped with not only uFactSet, but also Bloomberg, Morningstar, and Thomson Reuters. These financial platforms offer AIM students access to data and analytics.

All students in the AIM program (including the newest members who began their studies last week) have access to FactSet and the other platforms. PJ Dallman provided an overview of the capabilities of FactSet and offered advice to the students regarding the tools available to conduct fundamental research.
AIM Director, Dr. David Krause, and co-teacher, Bill Walker, have emphasized the importance of building codes into the financial models the AIM students employ.

Krause stated, “I’m pleased that PJ was able to provide a basic tutorial to the newest AIM class on the coding capabilities within FactSet. Bill and I realize that AIM graduates not only need to be competent with the Excel financial modeling skills, but they need to learn how to code to make reproducible models and incorporate real-time data.”
