Marquette Finance Students to Again Visit New York City During Fall Break

For the 13th consecutive year, Dr. Krause will chaperone over 25 Marquette students to NYC during their fall break from classes

Marquette students on a previous NYC trip
Well before sunrise on Wednesday, October 19th, Dr. David Krause (Director of Marquette’s Applied Investment Management program) and 26 finance students will be flying to New York City.

After battling their way through the major renovation efforts at LaGuardia Airport in New York, the students will arrive at the Novotel Hotel in Times Square. Taking a few minutes to explore the area south of Central Park, the students and Dr. Krause will regroup and head to their first visit: Morgan Stanley.

The Dean of the College of Business Administration, Dr. Brian Till, and Mr. Jeff Germanotta, Finance Lecturer, will also be joining Dr. Krause and the students at Morgan Stanley.

Over the years various Marquette alumni at Morgan Stanley have hosted the visiting students. Prominent alumni at the firm include James Runde, David Schlageter, Steven Holtkamp and Berent Kowarick.

The NYC Experience
Following this visit the students will proceed to nearby Bank of America Merrill Lynch. Noteworthy alumni working in New York at Bank of America Merrill Lynch include John Barrett, Tom Kruse and Ross Michler. This year there will be two senior executive that will address the students – and there will be an interactive session involving a case study that will be discussed with the students.  Adding a new twist this year - John Barrett and Jeff Germanotta have worked on a case in order to provide the students with a hands-on example of a credit decision.

Moving around NYC by subway
The students will be returning in the early evening to the Novotel Hotel and then be able to relax and explore the restaurants in nearby Hell’s Kitchen.

Bright and early on Thursday morning the students will meet Dr. Krause in the hotel lobby to take the short walk to BNP Paribas. Notable alumni at the firm include Rick Broeren, Louis Moran, Monica Raciti, Hendrik van der Zandt, Connor Muth and Jack Casey. Always one of the students’ favorite visits, we again expect to learn about all of the business functions within the Paris-based investment bank.

After the BNP visit the group walks over to Citi Private Bank for their annual visit. Prominent Marquette alumni with Citi include Dan Williams, Robert Leonard, Ann Eberle Thomas, Adam Bordner, Ryan Bailey, Kevin Lane, Colin Canfield and Clermond Jean. Nearly every year since 2005 the Marquette students have been hosted by Citi during the fall visit.
Next up is JP Morgan. Gerry Madigan, Ryan Loftus, Christina Starkey, Alex Ibrahim, Demetrius Liston, and Mariano Sanz are important Marquette alumni at JP Morgan & Company.

Mid-town Manhattan
New on this year’s student NYC visit is FactSet Research Systems. The AIM program is a subscriber to FactSet and Greg Romais will be hosting a visit to the NYC headquarter of this provider of financial software and information services.

The final visit of the day will be at Societe Generale. Guido van Hauwermeiren is our host and Dan Alon, an AIM alumnus, also works at the NYC location. This Paris-based bank will be the host of this year’s Marquette Finance Student & Alumni Reception with special guests Dean Brian Till and Megan Carver, Associate Director of the Kohler Center for Entrepreneurship.

On Friday the students and Dr. Krause will start the day at Balyasny Asset Management, where alumni Scott Schroeder and Jack Sullivan will serve as hosts at this New York hedge fund. Afterwards the students will trek to nearby Bloomberg – for a tour of the media and financial services giant.  The AIM program is a Bloomberg subscriber and Cody Clarkson will serve as the host.

A visit to lower Manhattan
The students next take the subway to lower Manhattan where they will visit Wall Street and other landmarks. After viewing the attractions (i.e. Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and the World Trade Center memorial) they will re-group and proceed to the final visit of the trip - RBC Capital Markets, located at the World Financial Center. Alumni hosts include Jason Spacek, James Bergin, Colleen Morrissey, Leslie Vowell, Michael O’Carroll, and Colleen Osborne.

After this visit the students will return via subway to the Novotel Times Square where they will be again afforded free time the rest of the evening. And by Saturday morning it’s back to LaGuardia Airport and back to Milwaukee by early afternoon.

Dr. Krause said, "This trip is made possible by the support of the NYC Marquette alumni group and we are extremely thankful for the opportunity to visit NYC. They open up their firms and allow our students to experience the workplace and corporate culture - it is an amazing opportunity for our students. For some, it is among their college highlights."
